this past August 28th I turned a year older and this past year began a new page in a new chapter for me. I retired after 26 years in law enforcement on January 1st of this year and for the first time since being 21 I was no longer in uniform and able to enjoy my family, free from 12+ hour shifts. I had been given 2 opus X as one of my retirement gifts and put it away for a special occasion(at 35$ a stick I wanted to save one). I decided that my first fist birthday in retirement was as good a time as any. So off to my front porch I settled into one of the big comfy wicker rocking chairs and proceeded to light up. my thought on a 35 dollar cigar follow as well as my impressions as a sauntered away a nice summer day....
The wrapper reminded me of a neutella that famed hazelnut spread of Italians and professional bicycle racers every where. The shape is of a figurado and is one of two In the box I got. the other being a Diamond crown Julius Cesar. These cigars are from the family charities line and a portion of the proceeds go to this charity and the opus x is a dominican puro.
the ignition was perfect and soon the figurado opened up and I was greeted with hints of anisette and spice.Over all I was noticing undertones of caramel and the bodie and flavor sat squarely in the medium zone. the opening act of this opus was did not disappoint.as I entered the second act strong notes of wheat and saw grass began to dominate blending in with floral notes.the ash was white, clingy and flaked off in large pieces. I was pleasantly surprised by the wheat and floral tones that emerged.I wasn't expecting that at all. as I rounded out the finale the caramel tones came forth again and a slight citrus added to the sinfonietta as this most excellent smoke ended in the crescendo.
Its not often most of us will light up a cigar that could be a full course meal. However as a gift it is spot on if the recipient is a cigar enthusiast. I was actually expecting this to be a full on smoke and enjoyed it more because of its subtlety and nuances of flavor. this cigar had no problem playing the strings of my palette.ALL THE BEST. -SMOKINJOE
